VARIETIES OF MEN THAT TREAD ALLAH’S EARTH
‘A man is a man,’ is a
popular maxim in the girls’ world.
This could not be farther
from the truth. There are tens of types of this kind that we like to call men. Together,
with your permission of course, we shall explore some of the types of men we
interact with everyday during our ramblings in college, and life.
So kindly, sit easy,
darling, hunk.
Indefatigable seekers of attention
You know them, don’t you?
They are all over the place. Showboating is their mustered art.
From shouting at the top of
their voices along the Academic Highway, to competing to answer questions in
class –never mind their take on the concept is wayward – dressing in showy
manners, brandishing flashy gadgets for everyone to see, these are a type you
MUST eschew.
Their ego tells them that
their Cupid’s arrow can prick every girl’s heart! How to treat them is simple:
ignore them.
Wannabe gentlemen
I sympathise with this
stock. They exhibit painfully excessive chivalry. The gent could scrub clean the whole corridor in his hostel simply
because a female friend has promised to drop by. He could starve himself to
feed his crush.
And generous givers of
favours these are! Whatever favour. If you are still grappling with the
semantics of this statement, I mean he could even sleep a little before the
crack of dawn, racking his brain on an assignment for some chic as the latter revels
at a school joint, worse with other men. What pity!
Alpha men
These are the real men. Real
men, mark you.
Such are driven by
testosterone, ambition and want to win, conquer. Alpha men exhibit the traits
of male animals you see on NatGeo. Call them cocky, but their aggressiveness is
incredible. Hate or like them, but these don’t compromise to impress anyone.
They are stout in their ethics, and relentless in their resolves.
Fortunate is the lady who
has earned for herself one of these.
Boys in men’s bodies
When you run into the path
of these, dear girls, flee. They are startlingly irascible, and display all puerile
tendencies you can think of. He can slap and insult you in your friends’
presence, and do anything to hurt your fragile
heart.
Their decisions are rash,
and actions silly. Did I mention that they complain a lot, about insignificant
things? In their hearts lives the fundamental imbecility of mankind.
Is there a better thing for
this type than to grow up?
Club invalids
The heart sometimes finds
home even on rocks, in thorns. Bad boys are adored by girls, en masse. Why so,
is clean beyond my ken.
These are men whose morals
are wild, dare I declare. They are crude in mannerisms, they make coarse jokes,
they are lazy, brutish and amazingly dirty. Dirty in grooming, and talk.
Whenever a lady passes by, whatever they see and remark would nauseate even the
dirtiest of hogs.
Let them be, for they are
under an irrevocable spell.
Womanish dudes
You must have seen them,
walking surrounded by a plethora of girls. Being in the midst of girls takes
them on cloud nine. They speak with girlish accents, fancy feminine articles,
and hang out with girls all the time.
If your bloke is this kind
of man, dear, a man who is ever at your lap; at the salon, during your girls’
time, and carries your handbag, what you have there is not a man. It is
something else.
Call me a chauvinist, but
these are a contemptible disgrace to all men worth the title.
For thy transgression
against us reeks, God shall not have
mercy on thee!
What kind of man is your
man, honey?
The day of the baboon: a memoir
On that material day, a Friday, a day straight from the abyss, I learnt
my hard lesson. In the cruelest possible way.
I learnt that selfishness is a virtue of the greedy stock.
I learnt that selfishness is a virtue of the greedy stock.
I also learnt that one man’s happiness, contentment and fulfillment, is as sacred as another man’s. Bet you didn't know that, huh?
I learnt too that however smart one is, they cannot outsmart every human soul.
After that day, what was left of me was a husk full of rue, guilt and self-detestation. Don’t even mention the embarrassment.
A beautiful day that morning was. Sunny and cloudless, the weather seemed to be in communion with the calm that filled my heart. Hope, happiness and …lit my countenance.
I had a date.
Not one. But three dates!
So many for one man, right? If you have ever vainly tried for so long to knit a Friday-night date, only to succeed when you least expected, I bet you have no trouble getting the gist.
‘It’s really my day today,’ I kept mumbling to myself all day as I rippled about my errands in college.
My friends too knew that their crony was expecting a blast of a Friday evening. On social media, this subject –of my triple dates –was discussed in an enormity that would delight the heart of an attention seeker en masse.
The first date was my ex-girlfriend. Crazy? I know. But that was it. Admittedly, we had long parted, but both of us were still living in the shadow of our former love.
When I had suggested the meeting with a positive response from her, I had jumped in joy and stroked anticipation.
Second was a friend.
Kate and I were so close that it was hard to tell if ours was plain friendship or real dating. We told ourselves that we were not, and that we were ‘just friends’.
Buddies though could not believe a word of it. For a genuine reason. There were many benefits in this affair: massages, kisses, sleepovers, favours and...you know what.
Third was a crush.
Neither of us had so far had the guts and strength to break the ice. What I knew was that I liked and, loved her. She loved me too, as everything she did to me indicated.
Did I say she was a First Year student? But it doesn’t matter, does it? Good.
Your buds have never tasted love from someone five-years younger! Gee, the devotion! Come the dawn of Saturday, who knew what could have been forged?
My small test though, fortunately or unfortunately, is that all the dates fell on a Friday, the 6th of November.
I wanted to have them all. Greedy? No. Lucky.
"Whatever I have with each of the trio is special in its own sense." Such was my wisdom.
Blinded by desire and my cockiness of the moment, I did not see this as a glaring quicksand, but as an absolutely blissful opportunity for an unrelenting seeker of romantic satisfaction.
Minutes and hours seemed to be on a go-slow today. They seemed to drag so much as I revelled in my heightened anticipation. I tried to distract myself with a number of activities, in vain. I tried to sleep, to talk to friends, and all which ended before time had moved any considerable units.
The ennui! The boredom! The eagerness! How they gnawed on my gut!
Evening did come eventually.
My earlier boredom was replaced by anxiety and the place of confidence taken up by...fear. How fragile a human being can get!
How will the dates turn out? Is it the wisest thing to have so much for the night? What if they get to know of my selfish plan, learn of my cruel intentions? What will happen?
Such are the questions that ceaselessly smote my cranium.
If one date crumbled, I would have two to spare. That was my self-comfort, as I prepared for the extraordinary evening.
If it was too bad for me and two dissipated, I would still have one to enjoy, like a man should.
Man, my fancy!
Presently, my phone rang. It was Martha.
"Hey, stranger. Are you still coming?’ I was to go to her place. A visit that would end up, probably, in a sleepover.
Sighing a huge relief that she had not cancelled the date:
"Yeah, why the fucking not?" Eagerness and vulgarity married.
"I’ve been waiting for so long. Please hurry, I miss
you."
"I miss you too." my voice was throaty, and broken. Excitement.
Then a costly slipup.
Damn me! I asked her a stupid question. About what kind of visit mine was. It was informal, what else? I proceeded to enquire about how long the visit would take, who with she was and other such idiotic questions. For worse.
The queries raised her red flag. The horse broke from the stable. Fast it trotted down the field.
My perpetual pleas and entreaties that ours would be a harmless meeting fell on ears of steel.
She had made up her mind: we would instead meet during the day, any day, preferably in a public place.
If you are still grappling with the semantics of that statement, sorry. The date was no more.
Dejected, I hung up.
"But you have two more, son" a consolatory voice inside me said to me.
Coincidentally, Kate steeped in. She found me still holding my phone, and an evident look of forlornness etched on my mien.
We hugged tightly, upon which I was somewhat comforted. Except that I did not know that what was to come was even more heartrending.
On a glass of passion juice, we sat for a chat. The conversation was short and precise.
She explained summarily that she would not be spending the night at my place with me. A friend had promised to take her for a night out. Curse the devil!
Thus she left.
I now had one chance. If this one failed, I would be done for, totally.
Reluctantly, I picked my phone. I dialled slowly. And listened.
My veins constricted. My heart thumped. My palms were suddenly wet with sweat.

TERROR: THE MONSTER OF OUR TIMES
Blood. Death. Destruction. Fear. An enemy of all humankind. An enemy to stability. A spice for animosity. Those are the words that are terror.
Terrorism
is a stubborn thorn in the foot of every nation in the world. Kenya has known
terror since 1998 when the American embassy in Nairobi was bombed by
terrorists. In 2002, terrorists struck again. This time it was a tourist hotel in
Kikambala, Mombasa.
Since
then, terror has become a reality among Kenyans.
The
Kenya Defence Forces’ 2011 incursion in Somalia to flush out the Alshabaab militants
forever changed the landscape of terror. In the past four years, more than one
thousand Kenya have lost their lives. Hundreds others have been crippled and
many more displaced.
Nerve-racking figures
Statistics
are heartrending.
Some
of the deadliest attacks include the Westgate mall attack that left close to
seventy dead, and property worth millions destroyed. The Garissa massacre on
Garissa University College campus left more than 200 hundred students dead.
Buses
carrying passengers have been detonated, revelers have been besieged in clubs
and killed, and religious houses have become a soft target for the heartless
insurgents. Villages at the coast of Kenya have been converted into arenas for
unspeakable bloodshed, and everywhere every time the smell of blood, horror and
death reeks.
There
have been calls to withdraw KDF troops from Somalia, from internally and
externally. Whenever conducting their horrific acts, the insurgents have told
Kenyans victims to ask their government to pull its soldiers from Somaliland,
and until when will they stop butchering Kenyan citizens.
The
government though has stuck to its guns, reasoning that an attempt to recall
the army from the besieged county will allow the rebels to regroup and hit with
more vim.
A global challenge
Terror
is a global challenge. Terrorists may attack anyone anywhere depending on their motive. No
one is cushioned against the ruthlessness of this form of barbarism…
Not a religious phenomenon
It
has often been argued that Islam is a religion that allows hard-line stances
particularly towards Christianity, promotes terrorism and glorifies extremism.
Jihadists believe that killing non Muslims sanctifies the killer, and pleases
their Supreme Being.
This
is wrong, and has equally been demystified. Islam distances itself from any
form of violence, and condemns the instigators, calling them deviants who use
religion as a shield and an excuse for their atrocious activities.
The journey
though has not been easy. A sharp divide has been curved between Christians and
Muslims in the world, as the former view the latter as a potential threat to
them. Sometimes it has been near impossible to peacefully coexist as there is
so much suspicion on both sides.
When
arrests are being made after an attack, the police sometimes act on the basis
of religion, without carrying out proper investigations, further straining the
already wobbly inter-religion relations.
US
President Barrack Obama during the White House Summit on Countering Violent Extremism said:
“All of us have the responsibility to refute the
notion that groups like the {ISIS} somehow represent Islam, because that is a
falsehood that embarrasses the terrorist narrative.”
Causes of terrorism
Locally,
terrorism is viewed in some quarters as a way to vent following annexation of
some areas by the authorities. Kenyans in the North Eastern part of the country
have for years felt that the government in Nairobi does not treat them equally
as other Kenyans in other parts of the country.
Poverty
levels in the region are higher, illiteracy is incredible and infrastructure
near totally absent. This as a result has evoked strong emotions among the
residents of the areas, especially the youth who take up arms in a bid ‘to make
a point to the state.’
The
child born of this marginalisation is
terror.
Graft
has also been a major culprit. Corruptible officials at border points receive
bribery from aliens, a practice which has made border points more porous, hence
entry by terrorists.
To
radicalise according to the Encarta
Thesaurus is “to make to undergo fundamental change, or to introduce
sweeping changes to something.” Political radicalisation is where people are
made to obtain radical political views.
This
is a dangerous dimension in the fight against terrorism.
In
the east, massive radicalisation has been ongoing in the past few years.
Islamic State or IS is a powerful and destructive movement that has come up to
preach violence, persecution and massacre of non-Muslims.
Closer
home, the government’s effort to fight terror has recently been curtailed in
the shape of the venomous python that is radicalisation. As the state puts in
place measures to prevent terrorism, it is also keeping an even keener eye on
the ground to ensure that the youth are not indoctrinated into extremism. This
has in consequence strained the resources set aside for securing all.
A
clear-cut example could be the crushing of the Mombasa Republican Council (MRC)
that was allegedly inciting its members against the state.
Effects of terror
Terrorism
has a direct impact on the stability of a country, on all fronts. People live
in tension and fear of attacks, deaths orphan children, widow spouses and rob
dependants of their bread winners. The threat posed by terrorism has made
teachers in Mandera County and some parts of Wajir quit their jobs, hence
crippling education in the region.
The
economy is usually a direct recipient of the brunt of this menace. More funds
have to be allocated to the security docket and intelligence agencies in the
country. For a country that relies on foreign grants and aid for sustenance,
this has been painfully hurting to Kenya’s balance and checks.
Occasional
travel advisories by European counties and America severely impair Kenya’s
tourism industry. Most of the visitors come from the west, and whenever such
warnings are given, the number of visitors often drastically falls. This has
the direct and immediate effect of less foreign exchange for Kenya, mass layoff
by hotels and closure of others, which leads to loss of jobs.
Restructuring the security system
There
have been major shakeups in the security organs of the country in the recent
few years. Under the Jubilee administration only, there have been two ministers
in the docket of security, and two holders of the post of the Inspector General
of Police.
The
former minister for Interior Joseph Lenku was fired after a series of invasions
within Kenyan borders that left tens if not hundreds dead. The then IG David
Kimaiyo was silently shown the door after he failed to secure Kenyans.
The
head of Intelligence Major General Michael Gichangi resigned after a plethora
of condemnations that the country’s intelligence organ was sleeping on their
job.
Gathering
of intelligence in the country has forever changed, with the restructuring of
the systems and an overhaul of the leadership. All this is done in a bid to
tackle terrorism head on.
There
have also been claims that Kenya’s spies do not promptly act upon the
intelligence gathered, either by ignoring it, or by dismissing it. This has on
several occasions exposed the country to the priests of terrorisms, where the
country is caught flat-footed.
Key partner in fight against terrorism
Kenya’s
has been a force to reckon with in the fight against terror in the region. Due
to its proximity with Somalia, it has helped the international community to
crush the Alshabaab by pursuing them deep into Somalia.
Additionally,
Kenya has been regarded as a island of peace in the region that is
characterised by tension and rebel fighting. Despite few challenges, Kenya
enjoys a plausible degree of democracy. On the other hand, there is perpetual
war in Uganda, there is a critical leadership crisis in South Sudan, Somali is
ungovernable and dictatorship is the order of the day in Burundi and Rwanda.
For
that reason, the US considers Kenya as the most reliable, and indeed willing,
partner in the fight against terror. That has also, in the eyes of the terrorists,
marked Kenya as a sympathiser of the west, and a common enemy.
Global efforts
There have been infamous attacks of airlines
like the Russian Airlines. Businesses too have not been spared either. Two French Muslim brothers,
Cherif fans Said Kouachi, invaded and killed scores of staff at the satirical
magazine Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris early 2015.
In
1998, a horror bomb went off in Nairobi killing nearly 300 people. Three years
later, the twin towers of the World Trade Centre in New York City were bombed
killing many people.
Rogue
gunmen have invaded and killed innocent school children in America.
Internationally,
terrorism is vehemently condemned. It is seen as a cowardly act by perpetrators
of these contemptible acts: killing innocent and unsuspecting humans.
Countries
suffer huge losses whenever terrorists strike. For this reason, there are calls
for concerted effort to deal through and through with this costly, destructive
and annoying nuisance.
Possible solutions
To
end terror, authorities and other stakeholders ought to address the matter
amicably, and in a manner that does not discriminate against anyone or any
group on the basis of ethnicity or religion –as it has been witnessed during
swoops by the police.
Intelligence,
however faint, MUST be acted upon, immediately and appropriately. It may help
counter a possible hazard.
All
people should be treated equally irrespective of their origin, religion and
political stand.
Above
all, any enterprise that will help to end the trouble ought to be embraced.
This
way, we will be able to once more enjoy a terror-free Kenya, region and world.
